VIC101 DESIGN RESEARCH AND WRITING 1

VISUAL PRESENTATION

Each group must design and produce a visual presentation based on the lecture series.

The visual presentation can be realized in a number of ways:

  • A book
  • A film
  • A poster, or series of posters
  • A wall display
  • A t-shirt collection
  • A website
  • A projection
  • Sculpture
  • Installation
  • Performance
  • A combination of any of the above... Etc.

The content can also be shaped in a variety of ways:

  • Covers it all
  • Focus on a specific movement
  • A specific aspect e.g. type, print publications etc.
  • A series of pertinent quotes
  • Key designers... Etc.

We would ask you to be creative, innovative and considered in your approach to this task. You must develop a strong rationale for you project and justify you choices regarding format, content, presentation delivery etc.

You should also consider your audience, who is your project for?

  • Children: what age? Where? Museum, school, indoors/outdoors? etc.
  • Prospective Viscom students: school, HE? Where? Web? Large-scale projection on school building etc.
  • Arts Centre/theatre: sculptural, posters, performance?
  • The general public: shopping Centre, City Hall, public park etc. flash mob?

Our advice is to spend as much time as you can planning and re-planning your idea. Keep it simple, design it well and take great care in the production.

You will be expected to present weekly updates on your project’s progress and you will be asked to formally pitch your idea to your peers by week 7.

3D Projection mapping in a realtime environment. Very Cool

An R&D project from B-Reel UK uses projection mapping to create a virtual multiplayer game that lets you use your mobile phone to allow you to control an "eel" on the installation.

Volcanic Eruption in Grimsvotn, Iceland

Volcanic Eruption in Grimsvotn, Iceland May 21 2011 from Jon Gustafsson on Vimeo.

Volcanic eruption in Vatnajokull. Shot for www.Helicopter.is - Helicopter Service of Iceland.

Haven't really had time to watch the video. Volcano season keeps me pretty busy. I cut it on board the helicopter on the way back from the eruption. Threw some music from the fantastic composer Veigar Margeirsson (www.veigar.com) on it and posted it here.

It took us 90 minutes to fly to Grimsvotn with a strong wind against us. The eruption looked magnificent in the sunset. We got there at 11pm. Once we landed 5 miles away from the crater the cold glacier air hit us like a truck. We tried to work outside but I only lasted for a couple of minutes. Pilot Reynir Petursson also didn’t want to stay on the ground for too long since it was very windy and the ash fall was unpredictable. The light was also disappearing and he needs visual reference which is difficult on a white glacier. Once we got off the ground again we had to stay low because there were so many lightnings all around the eruption. Getting hit by a lightning in that strong wind, extreme frost and next to a live volcano was not desirable. We made it back to Reykjavik at 2am. Now the airspace has been closed in a 20 nautical miles radius because of ash.

Last time Grimsvotn erupted was in the fall of 2004. At the time I was making the documentary Wrath of Gods http://www.wrathofgods.com and the eruption became a part of the story.

Need to write a creative brief?

Bellow are guidelines for anyone wishing to write the perfect creative brief. When engaging in a new project we want to get the ball rolling quickly, layout expectations early and agree time-scales and budgets.

Removing ifs, buts and maybes from the process greatly increases the chances of the designer surpassing the client's expectations and the development of a lasting relationship.

Frank Chimero: Anonymous asked: What advice would you give to a graphic design student?

If you meet a person who cares about the same obscure things you do, hold on to them for dear life. Sympathy is medicine.

Seeking advice is addicting and can become a proxy for action. Giving it can also be addicting in a potentially pretentious, soul-rotting sort of way, and can replace experimenting because you think you know how things work. Be suspicious of lists, advice, and lists of advice.

Everyone is just making it up as they go along

Great advice, great site.

Colors of the Social World (Wide Web)

ColourLovers is a great site and service for those of us who preferred colour palettes to Top Trumps as kids. Check out their article looking at twitter user theme colours by state in the USA. Clearly the conservative states are not happy places.

When a social network like Twitter allows a user to select a theme to represent themselves in the digital world, that user is choosing to identify their digital persona with colors... And we wanted to look at who chooses what colors... If the world is made up of people and those people have a color preference... what then is the color of Texas? What color are mothers? What color are we?

Tests for common HTML elements

This is something I have played with on and off when building websites for clients. The idea is to provide a single unpublished post that can be used as style reference when writing their own posts. For the most part it is ignored and merely serves as a way for me to make sure I have covered all the bases within the CSS.

I am pretty sure much of this example was pinched from someone else but I have no idea where or when, so apologies and thanks. Please feel free to steel from here and let me know if there are elements which would can be added.
